Essay Writing Checklist
The following guidelines are designed to give students a checklist to use, whether they are revising individually or as part of a peer review team.
- Is the main idea (i.e., the writer's opinion of the story title) stated clearly?
- Is the introductory paragraph interesting? Does it make the reader want to keep on reading?
- Does each body paragraph have a clear topic sentence that is related to the main idea of the essay?
- Does each body paragraph include specific information from the text(including quoted evidence from the text, if required by the instructor)that supports the topic sentence?
- Is there a clear plan for the order of the body paragraphs (i.e., order of importance, chronology in the story, etc.)?
- Does each body paragraph transition smoothly to the next?
- Is the main idea of the essay restated in different words?
- Are the supporting ideas summarized succinctly and clearly?
- Is the concluding paragraph interesting? Does it leave an impression on the reader?
- Is any important material left unsaid?
- Is any material repetitious and unnecessary?
- Has the writer tried to incorporate "voice" in the essay so that it has his/her distinctive mark?
- Are there changes needed in word choice, sentence length and structure, etc.?
- Are the quotations (if required) properly cited?
- Has the essay been proofread for spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc.?
- Does the essay have an interesting and appropriate title?

My parents' style of parenting was more of an authoritative style. When my parents wanted to discipline me they would either not give me spending money, make me take over one of my sisters chores or not let me go out to do fun activities with my friends and instead run boring errands with them. Being Mexican American probably had a play in the way that my parents raised me because they are from Mexico where the culture ruling is that parents are with authority because they are your parents. My parents tried to employ that same tone, I think they had high expectations of us (my sisters and I) to simply obey without question. This made it so that many things like asking permission for something and the answer being no, was non-negotiable. I'm sure it probably hurt their feelings when I got older and had more questions and stopped just blindly obeying requests to come hand them the remote but I'm pretty sure we're all past that. What I noticed in my family is that we all had both breakfast and dinner over at the table as a family unit we all just ate the same thing and chatted a lot. On the weekends we even had lunch together. I think that this made all of us have a more intimate relationship as a whole because we would all socialize about what happened all day or what we were going to do and everyone was there to kind of chime in whenever they liked. It's weird to think about the way the conversations worked because everyone was involved it wasn't like teams of two were just chatting everyone just took turns and shared about life. Having group meal dates everyday with my family made me a better listener and made me more patient. I think that students would benefit from dinners with the family because the skills learned here can be used with discussion activities in class, I think it helps teamwork skills as well. When students do not have this kind of social interaction group activates might not seem that easy in my opinion. If I could change anything about today's families I would make them more into group activities, I feel like everyone is just too independent to the point of them not interacting too much at all. I think that if we all interacted more being very different people all at different ages we could learn to be more accepting of others and be better prepared to socially function in a world that's only getting more population dense.
