Do you remember all those times when your parents told you to drink milk? Well, aren't you glad that you didn't? Milk is highly processed and filled with antibiotics. Because suppliers want to increase milk production, cows are often fed with the wrong food and kept in harsh conditions to preserve space. Thus cow milk can cause health issues for those who drink milk. Contrary to beliefs, cow milk is unhealthy for consumers. Cow milk is highly processed. Before milk is placed into a carton, it has to go through a certain process before it is shipped out to markets and stores. This process is called pasteurization or ultra-pasteurization. Pasteurization is the heating of milk to kill bacteria in the milk. Ultra-pasteurization is the heating of milk at a higher temperature for a longer period of time. Pasteurization not only kills bad bacteria but also kills friendly bacteria and gets rid of nutritious contents of the milk. This leaves the milk susceptible to contamination. Studies show that pasteurized milk loses about 66 percent of vitamin A, D and E. Along with destroying enzymes, such as lipase, that break down fat, this also decreases calcium availability. Those who consume milk take in fewer nutrients than the milk is able to provide. (Lori Lipinski) Many cows also contain many health problems that may lead to the diagnosis of antibiotics. Antibiotics are used in cows today from birth to death. Since not all cows are born with perfect health, they are fed antibiotics to treat their infections; the more severe the infection, the heavier the dose of antibiotic. Theses antibiotics end up in the milk we drink. As multiple antibiotics are being fed to cows, the bacteria are mutating and adapting to the drugs, therefore our milk is at a risk of contamination. Milk alone contains up to 80 different antibiotics. This means the milk we drink are full of antibiotics that we don't need and that can also cause the antibiotics that we personally take ineffective. Treated cow milk has a lower quality than untreated cow milk. (Lori Lipinski) Milk manufacturers focus mainly on the production of milk as their only goal is to profit from the high production of milk. Many suppliers begin to experiment and push themselves to find new ways to increase the production of milk. Companies began to practice selective breeding; this increases the amount of milk produced by a single cow. This led to the invention of a growth hormone, rBGH. This growth hormone increases the amount of milk a single cow produces. With this hormone, a single cow produces an average of 6 gallons of milk per day. This hormone causes cows to become very sick as they begin to develop problems in their digestive tracts along with an increased need for antibiotics. Not only are cows injected with the growth hormone, but they are also kept in harsh conditions and fed with the wrong foods. Cows spend most of their time in crowed buildings rather than on grass fields. They are kept in unsanitary stalls with hard cement floors hooked to milking machines. This means that they sit in their own waste with limited amount of free space. The food cows are fed are mostly grains which are not part of their diet; this affects the quality of our milk. If cows are kept in unsanitary areas and lack nutrients from being fed with low quality food then this can affect the milk produced in which we consume. We are drinking unhealthy milk that has poor nutrients that is being produced with the lowest possible care. (Lori Lipinski) There are many different types of health issues that cow milk can cause. Some people are allergic to dairy as it can cause an allergic reaction that could be life threatening. The amount of sugar in cow milk can cause diabetes and because cow milk is hard to digest it can lead to cancer and ear infections along as well as weight gain. Milk contains a high level of calcium which is indigestible for humans and binds to calcium in our body that makes us lose calcium. (Robert Cohen) Opponents to my position would argue that milk provides nutrients and high percentage of calcium that can help strengthen our bones and that not all cows need to receive antibiotic treatment as cows can be healthy at birth. According to them, this means that cow milk does not always need treatment so the milk is still qualified as satisfactory feed to humans. They suggest that we should not worry so much because not all cows need treatment; they provide us with the necessary minerals. (Ruth Styles) However, their position is incorrect because most of the cows are fed with treatments to improve their milk production, making it easier for companies to easily and quickly profit from a high production of milk. Also cows may be rich in calcium but their calcium differs from those that they provide. This causes us to lose calcium when two different minerals do not match. This shows my opponents are incorrect because the milk may be rich in a similar mineral that we need but we may not be able to digest it. Most companies that manufacture milk mainly focus on profit and high production. (Robert Cohen, Lori Lipinski) Milk has been present in our lives from the day we are born. Cow milk may cause many health issues or future problems but that shouldn't stop us from obtaining necessary nutrients. There are companies who are against the mistreatment of cows from antibiotics and hormones. There are many ways we can avoid this problem, and that is to change our diets or purchase unprocessed milk from pastured cows. With that, you can receive the right nutrients from healthy cows for a healthier being.
