As part of the quick improvement of technologies spreading wider and wider, the internet is commonly used for many purposes such as business dealing, website browsing, online gaming and social networking. Social networking especially is widely spread into every corner of modern society. It is fun, entertaining, and it also brings pleasure. However, it is a harm that decreases writing ability, consumes time and reveals personal information. First, social networking causes a decline of writing ability. In recent years, because of the increase in social networking, people are typing on computers instead of writing letters and speaking on telephones. To speed up the pace of typing and communication, people often uses abbreviations to make a word or sentence shorter rather than typing out the whole word or sentence. For instance, instead of typing you are right, an MSN user would key in u r rite. And when it is time to say good-bye, the user would just simply send g2g, which actually means got to go, to others. Also, the ignorance of punctuations and not capitalizing the initial letter at the beginning of sentences is now popular around the world. In fact, I want to go to your party, but I cant can be type as I wanna go 2 ur party but I cant-no comma, apostrophe, capitalization or period. Therefore, it makes the sentence informal. This writing ability decrease problem is mostly occurred in teenagers, because they have fewer learning experiences than adults. Overall, social networking is an issue of decreasing writing ability, especially in teenagers. Besides decreased writing skills, social networking has another disadvantage: time consumption. The key to social networking is that it is supposed to be fun, but if too much time is spent on it, it becomes a waste of time. As soon as people use it, the majority of users are addicted to it, and they cannot stop from chatting with their friends. As a result of indulging in it, those people often end up with lacking sleep and exercise, and finally left out with an unhealthy body. High school students particularly become more responsible with their homework. My cousin, for example, used to chat with his friends on MSN. Whenever he used it, he always stayed on it for a long time, because he lost track of time. He rarely handed in his homework or even got his work done. When it came to sleeping time, he did not stop. As a result, he often dozed in class time, and he could not apply for any college in Vancouver. Since social networking is so addictive, users who don't manage their time effectively, run the risk of experiencing its harmful effects. Finally, social networking puts personal information on the internet. People are constantly exposing information about their name, age, gender, location and many other types of information without realizing it. Most people say they are careful, but no one can be certain at any time who will be able to access their information. This has caused an increase in crime. Sometimes, when people are not cautious enough, their bank account can be accessed by criminals. Once thieves have access to the bank account money and identity can be stolen. The location of a person is also not hard for hacking experts to find. They can easily find out where a person lives, and this creates more opportunities for criminals on the internet. It is not a wise decision to put private information on the internet when socializing with others.
