Native American poetry has many outstanding qualities that describes the people, culture, religion, and activities that Native Americans did. Native Americans did't write their poems in English; in fact, they did not write them at all. Their poetry was passed from one generation to another as songs. Poems described many things in native American life style, such as what people thought of when they were disappointed, how they enjoyed doing something with their families, or what kind of things they did out in the field. Most of the time Native Americans created their poetry as the did some kind of work. The first outstanding quality of Native American poetry would be activity, because it helps the reader to get the idea of what the speaker of the poem does. That way the reader will be able to understand what happened and why the speaker felt the way he did. Activity pretty much helps the reader to get a point of speaker's happiness, depression, disappointment, etc. In other words activity helps the reader to figure out speaker's mood and the point of the poem. A second outstanding quality of Native American poetry would be personification, because it gives life to the poem. it makes the reader think more about the poem and look at the world in a different way. For example, in the "I Went to Kill the Deer" poem by Taos Pueblo the speaker talks about the eagle talking to a deer, kind of like the eagle tries to tell the deer that the danger comes. Now the writer makes the reader think that animals talk to each other and that he can understand what they talk about. The poem also talks about a mountain having a heart which makes the reader think of a mountain being a different thing than what everyone else thinks it is. Third outstanding quality would be rhyme, because with out rhyme the poem would make no sense, the whole poetry thing is based on rhyming. many of Native American poems don't rhyme, like the "I Went to Kill the Deer" poem doesn't rhyme so it sounds more like a story than a poem. It makes the reader wonder if that supposed to be a story or a poem. Well maybe it would sound better in the Native American language, because in English it kind of makes the poem a bit boring. But every reader has his/her own opinion about poetry and poetry related things. In conclusion Native American poetry tells the reader many different things about the Native America history. After reading a couple of poems the reader would be able to tell if the speaker a male or a female just by figuring out what kind of activity the writer did. Now Native American poems are translated to English so everyone can understand them, even thought they make a bit less sense than they would ion Native American language. Native Americans used poetry to express their love for nature.
