Though a 1994 film made by Walt Disney Animated Classics, The Lion King is a great example of an epic. I chose to write an essay on it, of how it is an example of an epic because, my sisters and I have grown up with this movie, it being a classic. Since being young, you can't understand some things fully, we have grown and been able to appreciate and understand meanings of movies such as this one. Having a 7 year old little brother around, this movie is still being watched till this day. So I planned to do an essay on a very well-known movie such as this one. Rafika and Zazu are the two characters that are all-knowing and wise. Rafika is wise because he is very spiritual and relies on his inner sense to guide him and do things that he believes is correct, which he is right most of the time. He is the one who is at ceremonies and events. Zazu is wise and all-knowing also. He is the one who is always by the king's side, almost like a sidekick. He helps by guiding and protecting the king's offspring. He also helps by bringing news to the king about the pride lands. Mufasa is the epic hero in this movie because he is the most important lion. He has a job, he has to keep his whole group of lions and lionesses protected and alive. He must keep outcasts away from him home too. When he was king, he had a cub with one of the lionesses, but once he died, his cub is still too young to be king, so he is told to run away and never come back. After that, his evil uncle, Scar, takes his place as king. He ruins everything! He would the antagonist is this movie. He is against Simba, the cub, and his father. He destroys everything! This movie is also an example of an epic because it takes place in a vast setting. It takes place in Africa, the viewer can assume that this place is huge, due to Mufasa's words at the beginning of the movie. He says "Everything the light touches is our kingdom", meaning everything that has light belongs to him. This movie takes place in a lot of different places. Even though it may be animated, it is meant to show that it takes place in a part of Africa. Another Hero in this story would be Simba. He is the rightful king, but since he was told to run away and never come back, Scar, his uncle has taken over. Over the years that Simba has been away he has let go of the thought of ever becoming king. He doesn't want that life anymore, but once he is motivated he sets out back to Pride Rock to take back his place as king. Once he gets there he is forced to challenge his uncle to the spot of being king. Soon he and his pride are in war against Scar and his sidekicks. An epic also needs villains. In this case they are the hyenas and scar. They want nothing to do with Simba, so they are set out to kill him. Every other lion is desperate for food and water so they are on Simba's side, hoping to have Simba as king and reconstruct their lives. Though many challenges, Simba is able to receive what was his. He takes back Pride Rock and everything is well again, so he can start a family of his own. In conclusion, the movie, The Lion King, is an example of an epic. It has examples of hero's, villains, challenges, battles, and setbacks, but in the end everything works out on the main characters side. This is my essay on how the movie that I picked out of the list is an example of and epic. It describes in detail the many ways that there can be challenges but you have to face them and just be strong about it. - Ana Leonard
