In our modern society a personal trainer is often though of as a bulky body builder who flirts with all his female clients just trying to get some. As a personal trainer in today's fitness world we must try to establish a new stereotype as educated and fit professionals. One of the main ways of doing this is to conduct business with clients in an ethical manner. Most people think of ethics as "Doing the right thing." But what is doing the right thing in the personal fitness profession. These are some guidelines that the IDEA Health and Fitness Association has adopted for all it's members to adhere by. 1. Always be guided by the best interests of the client. This just basically means that we need to put the interests of the client above our own interest. When we are working with clients and putting together fitness programs we must always consider what is best for the clients is their safety, health, and welfare. Always consider how the program, or recommendations, will impact these three areas for the client in the present and in the future. 2. Maintain appropriate professional boundaries. There are several areas to consider in this category. The first, and most important in my opinion is to never exploit-sexually, economically, or otherwise-a professional relationship with an employer, an employee, a coworker, or a client. Another thing is to respect all your clients' privacy. All information that is of a personal nature (ie. conversations, results, behavior, etc.) should be kept confidential. Another major area of concern is touching in a professional manner. As a personal trainer there is a lot of touching involved to encourage proper lifting and posture, but in our society we must be very careful to guard against improper touching. Always let the clients know you are going to touch them to correct to demonstrate, and at the first sign of discomfort or at their request discontinue touching immediately. 3. Maintain the education and experience necessary to appropriately train clients. In order to provide the highest quality of fitness services we must always keep up-to-date on the latest information about physical fitness. This is done to provide the best fitness programs available to our clients. Also we must always recognize our limitations in services and techniques, and never attempt to provide services or information that goes beyond our qualifications. Also maintaining proper certification and/or licensing for the area of work you are in is essential. 4. Use truth, fairness, and integrity to guide all professional decisions and relationships. If we use truth, fairness, and integrity as a foundation for all professional decisions and relationships we will be building into that new stereotype of the educated and fit professional. Clients, coworkers, employers, and employees deserve nothing less than high standards of truth, fairness, and integrity fro us, just as we expect it from them. 5. Show respect for clients and fellow professionals. This would seem common sense for anyone who wants to excel and grow in their business. Treating the people involved in running a professional fitness business is essential to advancement, as it is in any field of business. Acquiring a reputation of dealing with people in a respectful manner will continues to bring people back and make it that much easier to attract new clients/ employees/ employers/ etc. 6. Uphold a professional image through conduct and appearance. In the fitness world sometimes image is everything. Maybe it shouldn't always be, but a lot of times that what it is. As a professional we need to uphold a certain standard of conduct and appearance that is seen to be professional by everyone around us. Some suggestions for this is to avoid smoking, substance abuse, unhealthy eating habits, and to speak and dress in a manner that increases people's comfort levels. Upholding standards such as these will help progress the professional field of personal trainers. Establishing guidelines will only increase business and reputation for the individual personal trainer as well as the whole profession. Our society is one that desires trust and moral behavior with customers, we would be doing the profession of personal fitness a huge disfavor by acting in any way that was contrary to this. "Earn Respect, Credibility, and More Business.
