Certified Nursing Assistants have an extensive workload and provide all of the direct care that nurses used to years ago, and they are nowhere near paid as much as they should be today. They deserve much more pay than what they are getting. Nurses in the present would be in way over their heads without them, and nursing assistants should not be taken for granted. Unfortunately they are, and it is not fair that they are at the bottom of the totem pole when they are the ones who deal with many situations from patients in a hospital or residents in a residential facility on a regular basis. For instance Cnas who have to work in a lockdown Alzheimer's unit not only have to provide residents with their activities of daily living, they also have to deal with the combativeness of the disease. Hitting, biting, kicking and throwing things are just to name a few. Cnas also put their health as well as their family's health at risk by exposing themselves to diseases like Aids or hepatitis to ensure residents are taken care of efficiently. There is often times a lot of physical and emotional distress from not only being attached to the residents but also in performing their daily duties. In a long term care facility many residents are there till their final days and when those residents pass it puts a lot of heartache on the staff. There are not a lot of people waiting in line to become a certified nursing assistant and there is always a job available. Often times nursing assistants are mandated to work double or extra shifts to cover the lack of employees which can cause a burnout very quickly. Unfortunately, more often than not people take the Cna classes thinking they are going to make a small fortune in this field. Generally, class is offered in either a two week class or a one month class which is not a whole lot of learning time, and they do not realize the intensity of the job until they are actually placed on the floor. This results in inadequate care for the residents in more ways than one. Not only are they being mistreated by the Cna who is irate because they now realize that the job duties and pay are not what they thought it would be, you have extremely tired Cnas who have to pick up the slack. This results in short staffing for many facilities because aids are not being paid the amount they are actually worth. "Ihirenursing.com says the average experienced base salary for Cnas in Arkansas is fifteen thousand dollars a year." The rate of pay also differs depending on the region, and still it is just not enough. Without nursing assistants today Licensed Practitioned and Registered nurses would not know what to do or how to manage med passes or charting on a daily basis. Patient care would not be top priority and many specific needs would be overlooked. So why is it that Cnas do not get the pay that comes with the workload?
