There are many different types of music. Some artists music has profanity and some do not. Many parents complain about their children going out and buying a cd that has a lot of profanity on it. Censorlization of cds would benefit both children and parents because you would not have to worry about what your children are listening to. Therefore, the content of music lyrics should be censored. Rap is the voice of the streets. If the language of rap changed it would take away the truth of the lyrics. Also, if the words of artists songs change they will not be as real because the songs they write are about their lives. Kids know what lyrics should be repeated and what should not be repeated. Most people agree that the lifestyles of many gangster rappers make them terrible role models. Because of its ability to give shape and definition to certain human ideas and conditions, music had earned a unique place in society. Because the songs degrade women people view rap as anti-female. For example, in one of Notorious B.I.G songs he degrades women by calling them an expletive name. Rap can be degrading to women but there are exceptions. Released by Tupac Shakur was a song called Keep Your Head Up that was positive and focused on honoring black women for their deeds. Even though that song was successful, he later degraded women and talked about violence in his songs. Rap is a male- dominated field, and in the views of society black males especially are viewed as violent and sex- driven. Award winning rap artists Jay-Z and Eminem write songs that are not always suitable for young listeners ears. In rap lyrics with bad words are common. Eminem's songs contain rude behavior and violence. Eminem released a song that received heavy radio play including a lyric Raping lesbians / while they are screaming lets just be friends. The song, My Name Is also contained statements about decapitating various female celebrities, slashing a fathers neck with razor blades, attacking a teacher and heavy alcohol and drug abuse. Overwhelming the perpetrators of violence were black men, half of the victims were white women. The Columbine shootings in April 1999, in which two high school students gunned down twelve students, a teacher, and then shot themselves, the issue of the effect of violent lyrics and music resurfaced. A parent can only do so much. Parents are not around their children twenty-four- seven. Kids go to school, they work, and they go out with their friends and may be at other parents house. So there is no way a parent can control what their children listen to. Therefore, the content of music lyrics should be censored. Just to be safe and make sure that children do not listen any explicit lyrics.
