Teacher Quality in Education Teacher quality has a major influence on how the students will learn and perceive the information given. As time has gone by, teachers have gone through many things that can help them become better teachers. There are tests in which to certify them and to make sure that they can teach to their best ability. In some cases, even if a teacher is certified they might not be fully interested in their teaching so the students might not be getting the full attention that they need and they might not be working to the best of their abilities. They feel that if the teacher isn't showing interest, then why should they. Teacher burnout is something that occurs in teachers when they become disinterested in their teaching. All of these things are major factors in teacher quality and this essay will prove how these aspects lead to either positive or negative teacher quality. Throughout history it has been a long process in getting teachers to be certified. "In 1858, the superintendent first authorizes that teachers need to be certified. In the year of 1873, the state board of education created an examination that teachers needed to pass in order to be certified within the school systems. In 1876, the board of education of cities of the first and second class were authorized to certify teachers. In 1893, the state board of education authorized to substitute credit from approved colleges for examination in those subjects as qualification for the certification of teachers. In 1909, the state board of education authorized to issue certificates to high school graduates completing high school normal training courses and passing a state examination. In the year of 1915, the legislature set Bachelor degree requirements for all people who wished to teach in a high school environment. This meant that their level of education must be higher in order to obtain this." (http://www.kckps.org/disthistory//tchr_certification.htm) That was only the beginning of the history of teachers becoming certified. Now, there are many more requirements for teachers to become certified. Since there are so many prospective educators, the standards are becoming much higher and many more teachers are becoming certified. When a teacher is qualified it is supposed to make the students be better able to obtain the information given in a positive way. However, this is not always the case. "Nearly all existing research on teacher qualifications or state regulations demonstrates that they have no significant relation to student performance. In fact, teacher qualification requirements have no positive correlation with even teacher performance." (Klicka) The training of teachers to become qualified is basically a way to control the teaching profession. In doing this, they are seeing the teachers' abilities but they are not taking everything into consideration. They also have to look at personality because some of the best teachers may not be as smart as the others but will be more focused on what they need to cover in the classroom. While qualifying teachers, the states do not have intent of advancing learning success but just picking teachers that they feel will bring good things to the classroom. Many teachers figure that since they are qualified, they do not have to put as much effort into their work. This negative attitude given by the states and teachers can have a great impact on the students. Parent involvement can make a teachers life much easier and less stressful. The parents need to support their children and their educators. New teachers can have a hard time adjusting to the new environment and with the parents support; it could make the transition much easier. One way for this to occur is for the parents to offer to help out in the classroom. If a holiday is coming up, have some of the parents come in and help with an arts and crafts project so that there is more time to create the project. Another way for parental involvement is to have the parents talk to the teachers if their child has a problem. Sometimes a child might be shy and not want to approach a teacher because the child thinks they might think that he or she is stupid because they don't know the answer. If a parent tells the teacher about this, it is easier for the teacher to help the child with what he or she needs and can set aside some one on one time with the student. One last way to help keep a teachers life less stressful is to make sure that your child does their homework. If you keep tabs on your child and make sure that they are doing all of their work, it makes the job of a teacher much easier because they do not have to discipline the child for not doing his or her work. Also, if your child obtains a poor grade on a test, do not come down harshly on the teacher. It might not be the teachers' fault that the child didn't do a good job. By yelling at the teacher, it would just create a hostile environment for everyone that is involved. With the parents help, they can make the environment of the classroom much more enjoyable for everyone. A negative effect of teacher quality is known as teacher burnout. Burnout is "the exhaustion of physical or emotional strength or motivation usually as a result of prolonged stress or frustration." (Merrieam-Webster, 2003) Burnout usually occurs because of many reasons, but a few of the most common are: lack of energy, lack of interest, lack of self-confidence, or lack of enthusiasm. A few other reasons that burnout occurs are because of lack of ideas, lack of concentration, and lack of humor. Teacher burnout happens to most teachers at any one time during their career. Teachers can become uninterested in what is going on in the classroom. "Teachers who experience burnout are less sympathetic toward students, are less committed to and involved in their jobs, have a lower tolerance for classroom disruption, are less apt to prepare adequately for class, and are generally less productive." (http://www.edweek.org/jobs/jobstory.cfm?slug=07burnout_cc.h02). There are many effects of stress that teachers feel when they are experiencing burnout. Some of these include feeling exhausted and feeling overwhelmed. They feel this because they cannot take the stress that comes along with the job anymore. This is basically proving that when a teacher starts to obtain burnout, their quality will lessen and they will become less interested in what is going on in the school environment. There are many ways in which burnout can be prevented. "One way in which to do this is to provide workshops and advanced courses to keep the teachers interested in what they are doing. You can also provide more support and to build better communication and decision-making involvement with administrators." (Carter, 2003) When teachers open up to new ideas and teaching methods, sometimes burnout can be prevented or lessened. Another way to prevent burnout from occurring is to find something that makes you happy. If you are thinking about something good, it will make it easier for you to get through the day and to be able to concentrate on your teaching abilities. You also need to manage your time better if you want the burnout to not be as extreme. Do not save grading papers until the last minute. Also, take breaks while grading. "Maintaining a healthy diet and exercising regularly are also other ways to cope with the stress. Also, every once in a while, take a day off. This will help you deal with the stress that you are experiencing." (Carter) You will become less stressed out and it is easier to focus on what the student is trying to present when you have some time for yourself and then go back to it. The most important thing to do while experiencing teacher burnout is to make sure that you are taking care of yourself. Eat healthy, go out occasionally, be with friends, get a good amount of sleep. Don't just sit around in your house doing nothing. Burnout is a major issue that is occurring in schools today and it is causing many students to not live up to their greatest potential. Online sources are an extremely important subject when it comes to teaching. Teachers can acquire their lesson plans from the web. They can also obtain great ideas for class projects and class trips throughout the internet. Teacher quality can also be influenced in a great way throughout online sources. There are tests online that can assess a teacher's ability. These tests can help acquire the teacher to become better qualified for the profession. Also, the students can now take quizzes or look up the material needed for the class on the internet. Without having internet sources available, this would not be possible. Internet sources are extremely important when it comes to teacher quality and can have a major influence on whether or not a teacher is qualified or not. Teacher quality is a very important topic when it comes to teaching. There are so many people who are now aspiring to become teachers that the states need to look for the best qualified to take on the jobs. Whether you want to teach in a high school, middle, or elementary environment you need to pass the required tests. Parental involvement is also a huge factor that goes along with teacher quality. If the parents are involved, then it makes the lives of the teachers less stressful. Teacher burnout is another aspect that goes with teacher quality. Though it may be a negative effect, it is still one of the most common situations that teachers get themselves into. Getting out of the habit of not being interested in what educators are teaching is an extremely difficult task and takes a lot of effort and time. It doesn't just happen instantly. Teacher quality is a major element in the world today and getting teachers better qualified for the positions is going to be a really tough task that people all over the world today will need to overcome.
