It is impossible not to walk into the office with a beaming smile. I am surrounded by a group of people that share the same passion I do - studying numbers in order to make our company prosper. I crave for the opportunity each day to analyze the data and use my leadership to make key decisions to make the operations run efficiently. The company I will have the opportunity to do this for has yet to be determined, but it is never too early to start planning for the future. It was preached to me the second I entered senior year in high school: internships lead to jobs. I understand that in this highly connected world the ability to get a job almost solely depends on connections. Once I exit college, I am practically guaranteed to work for a company that I worked with in the past - a company that knows me. To a potential employer, character is as important as the employee's skill level. Therefore, my first step is seeking out that internship that will allow me to grow my connections. I will go out and personally connect with companies through interviews while also applying for some online through websites like LinkedIn or AfterCollege. This, without a doubt, is the most imperative leap forward. There is no replacement for one's own network. While it is important to think about the future, it is also crucial not to get ahead of oneself. This being said, my second step this year will be to focus on the moment and get the job done now. I am taking 18 hours this semester, and it will be very easy to fall behind. A lot of students do not realize what happens today effects tomorrow and so on. My goal is to keep my GPA high to keep options open in the future regarding prestigious graduate programs. Thus allowing my network to grow even further. All these steps are interconnected. My third goal for this year is to better plan for my future. I believe early exposure to career planning is important. The career service office is a fantastic place to find useful people and information. They can help me find opportunities while also exposing me to different career options I may have never considered otherwise. I plan to use these resources while I can. Part of the planning for the future is taking skill assessment tests to better understand the skills I can use to my advantage while also seeing a group of weaknesses I will work to improve before I go out into the real world. This next year will be a year of resume and skill building. A year full of opportunities to connect with not only helpful faculty, but like-minded students who I can work with to further grow my network. Aside from numbers, I also have a passion for golf. I would love to create a golf clinic in my home city, Phoenix, Arizona. The truth with a business degree and a love of numbers the opportunities are endless. The important thing is to use my formative college years to grow outside the classroom. From growing my network to helpful internships, my focus is on becoming a well-rounded college graduate. I think the plan outlined above will help do just that. My future starts today.
